SF Budget Chair Stands with Community Groups on $25 Million Campaign to Put People First in the Budget

On Thursday, June 8 at 1pm on the steps of City Hall, Supervisor Chris, Chair of the Budget Committee, will be standing with community groups who are launching a $25 million campaign to fill critical unmet needs in San Francisco’s public services and human services infrastructure. Symptomatic of these unmet needs is San Francisco’s soaring homicide rate, the tenuous living conditions for seniors and the exodus of working families from the City. “San Francisco still has many critical unmet human needs,” said John O’Brien from Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth. “Until we see a stop to the exodus of low and moderate income families who are getting priced out of San Francisco and until we see a dramatic slow down in the violence, we’ll be calling on the City and County to commit greater resources for people services.”

This year’s budget shows a dramatic $63 million increase in general fund monies for capital projects and $11.5 million for the new untested 311 Call Center. “The Mayor’s budget focus is on capital, however everyday people who rely on City services are still struggling. We need to put San Franciscans first.”

The coalition of community groups includes Senior Action Network, Planning for Elders, Coleman Advocates for Children and Youth, SomCan, the Community Outreach and Street Intervention Coalition, Chinatown Community Development Center, Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation, San Francisco People’s Organization, the Living Room Senior Center, the Youth Commission, La Voz Latina, the Coalition on Homelessness, La Raza Centro Legal, the Immigrant Rights Response Network, member of the Arts Task Force and the Transgender Law Center.

Some of the critical unmet needs include:

$1.9M in child care support, child care facilities and after school programs
$1.4M in community arts and cultural centers
$1.5M in employment training and services for youth, including homeless youth, transgender people, and parents of low income families and ex-offenders.
$2.4M in HIV/AIDS related services including housing subsidies
$2M in services for seniors and people with disabilities including meal programs, housing assistance, personal outreach and attendants and other key services.
$1.5M in legal outreach services and housing support for immigrant families and workers.
$560K for micro-enterprise and small business support
$475K for substance abuse services
3.35M for violence prevention programs, including saving San Francisco Trauma Center, extending street intervention to young adults, expanding re-entry services for ex-offenders, and extended case management services for victims of gun violence at SF General.
$920K in Park and Recreation fixes and programs.
