Hindi ka nag-iisa–
You are not alone
Hello San Francisco My Way readers, the Underground Concierge here with something a little different for “Places Of Interest”. The Philipino community holds a parade during the Christmas season. On December 10th , 2005, the Parol parade was held on Mission Street at 5:00 pm. It was a beautiful evening with many of the community gathered at Bayanihan House to march and celebrate the holiday. The Parol is a fount of light, a sign of hope amidst the “darkness” in the world. Liwanag at dilim (light and darkness) is the same thought process that bestowed members of the Katipunan (meaning “the association”) the drive and will to fight during the Philipine revolution.
The failure of the reform movement became quite evident in 1892 when Dr. Jose Rizal was arrested and banished to Dapitan. Andres Bonifacio founded the Katipunan on the very night that the news of Rizal's deportation to Dapitan leaked out. Bonifacio and his followers did not dream of mere reforms. They were interested in liberating the country from the tyranny of the Spaniards and the only way, in their minds, to accomplish their end was to prepare the people for armed conflict. Thus, Bonifacio founded the Katipunan on a radical platform, to secure the independence and freedom of the Philippines by force of arms. The official name of his organization was Kataastaasan, Kagalang-galang na Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan, The Highest and Most Respectful Society of the Sons of the People.
The star lantern is a Christmas symbol in the Philippines. Filipinos call the star lantern a parol (pah-ROLL). A parol is a five-pointed star inside of a circle. It is made out of bamboo and bright paper, and there is usually a candle or light inside the parol.
Filipinos start making parols three moths before Christmas. The men and boys cut the bamboo. People bend the bamboo into frames of different sizes. The women and girls cut paper. They glue the paper to the bamboo frame. Each point of the star has a tassel (buntot or tail). Parols hang everywhere in the Philippines during the Christmas season. They are found in homes, stores, and churches. They remind many Filipinos of the star the wise men followed.
Filipinos have a saying, “ang sakit ng kakingkingan ay damdam ng boung katawan” the pain of the little finger is felt by the entire body. The problems of one person is shared by all. By sharing in the Parol, one is able to share in the light to overcome the darkness. This noble act malasakit – expressing emapthy, brings people together, letting them know, they are not alone.
